Give the greatest possible error for each of the measurements.

a. 141 m
b. 4.2 cm
c. 2.57 ft

Measuring distances in the real world frequently results in errors. To calibrate measuring instruments, the greatest possible error (GPE) allowable is established in order to maintain consistency from one instrument to another.

Measuring distances in the real world frequently results in errors. To calibrate measuring instruments, the greatest possible error (GPE) allowable is established in order to maintain consistency from one instrument to another.

The greatest possible error (GPE) of a measurement is one-half the unit used.

For example, if the width of a piece of board is measured as 5 cm, the actual width must be between 4.5 cm and 5.5 cm. Therefore, the GPE for this measurement is 0.5 cm.

In another example, if the width of a button is measured as 1.2 cm, then the actual width is between 1.15 cm and 1.25 cm, and so the GPE is 0.05 cm or 0.5 mm.
