For the following report, identify, if possible, a) the population; b) the population parameter of interest; c) the sampling frame; d) the sample; e) the sampling method, including whether or not randomization was employed; and f) any potential sources of bias you can detect and any problems you see in generalizing to the population of interest.

An environmental agency took soil samples at 17 locations near a former industrial waste dump and checked each for evidence of toxic chemicals. They found no elevated levels of any
harmful substances.

Population: The population is the soil around a former waste dump.

Parameter of interest: The population parameter is the concentrations of toxic chemicals.

Sampling frame: The sampling frame is the accessible soil around the dump.

Sample for the study: The sample is 17 soild samples.

Sampling method: The sampling method used was not clear.

Is the sampling method random?: since the method was not clear, it is not known if the sampling was random.

Type of Bias: Not clear, it is not known if the samples were randomly chosen.

Any problems? " None
