The endurance limit of a steel frame is investigated by pulsate rig tests. 5 tests have been carried out. For each test, the stress level s in MPa as well as the number of cycles to failure n (1000 cycles) have been reported: (s; n) = ((55; 1240); (60; 1039); (65; 834); (70; 718); (75; 599))
(a) Create a scatter plot. Is there any relation between s and n?
(b) Calculate the correlation coefficient and interpret the results.
(c) Does the correlation coefficient change if the variables are transformed,
• in case of a different scale (e.g., cycles instead of 1000 cycles) ?
• in case of correlating log s and log n ?
